“Some men see things as they are and ask ‘why?’ – I dream things that never were and ask ‘why not?'”
– George Bernard Shaw
So, who am I and what is Ruach Outside the Box?
As for me, I’m a Freelance Jewish Educator, Writer, Editor, Writer, Ba’alat Tefilah, and Speaker
Most recently, I contributed three chapters to a forthcoming book called Spiritual Pregnancy: Nine Month That Will Transform Your Life by Drs. Shawn S. Tassone and Kathryn Landherr. It’s coming out late in 2012. Drawing on Jewish liturgy and other texts, as well as Abraham Joshua Heschel’s ideas about Radical Amazement, the three chapters help expectant (and new) parents experience this incredible event in a unique way.
For the past 13 years, I’ve served Congregation Beth Shalom as Ritual Educator, running a large B’nai Mitzvah program, an even larger lay Torah Reading program, teaching numerous adult education classes, leading services for adults, families and children. My tenure there, however, is at an end as I’ve decided to go completely independent.
Over the last few years, I’ve been pursuing and increasingly successful freelance writing/editing career, serving as Co-Executive Editor of Technorati Magazine’s magazine of entertainment and opinion, Blogcritics. I’ve written a book on the hit TV Series House, M.D., and have been on the lecture/speaking circuit in the Chicago metro area on a variety of Jewish and secular topics.
Outside the Box is how I live my professional life–and, for that matter, my personal life as well. Innovation, trying new things when the old becomes tired and worn, finding new ways to reach people through singing, writing, teaching, engaging in discussion and debate. This is what I’m all about. This is what this new enterprise is all about. So many topics; so many ideas to share with your organization. From a pop culture perspective on ethics to insights into the publishing process; from a humorous, but hopefully inspiring, take on raising curious kids to an inside look at making a television series: invite me in and we’ll have a great time at your next event! Spirited discussion and lively debate: that’s what I’m all about.
Ruach is pronounced “ru-ach” (as in Bach) and is Hebrew for “spirit.” It has always been my goal in my professional life as an educator, speaker or writer to bring an infectious spirit to everything that I do. Whether it’s been as a Jewish professional, public affairs consultant, writer, blogger, author, educator or singer, It has been my mission to make the seemingly inaccessible, accessible to everyone, no matter their background.
This is why Ruach Outside the Box was created.
